“Trash”

So I hooked up my newly assembled 360 hard drive enclosure last night and power the puppy up: no red rings thus far. So as far as I know I’m all good hard drive wise. After of course I didn’t really have anything specific to do with my 360. I attempted to play some Netflix but despite what I thought to be an impressive new-and-improved high speed internet connection Netflix kept buffering or failing completely. Apparently despite the many choices this relatively sparsely populated area has for internet the cable connection at least just isn’t up to par at least half the time. Or so.

One thing I should mentioned about the prior post: I embedded that video without watching it first. Actually it turns it I had watched it up before when I took apart the drive all those weeks ago I just didn’t re-watch that video in particular when I went to embed it. Anyway it’s kind of bizarre with all the seemingly random sounds effects and music clips playing and when he goes to put it back together it was fast forwarded and I could hardly tell what he was doing from the poor video quality and lighting. So conclude don’t bother with the video, at least for the put back together part. I was waiting for another Youtube video to finish loading when I figured out how to put it back together on my own. It’s actually pretty easy, I just had to realize there were two slots conveniently provided for the to tabs on the other half. That and the spring/arm/button-tab-thing fitting together eventually. I think I made it more difficult than necessary by wanting to watch videos of it being done first.

Since I just happened to have the “memory unit” (a.k.a. 512 megs of flash that is only 10+ times more expensive that it is worth) so I thought maybe there’s a file management feature in the 360. And yes, yes there is. So since I had it I started copying over some of the save games from the hard drive to the memory unit. Why MS doesn’t just provide everybody with a couple megs of space for save games in “the cloud” I don’t know. I mean everybody already has to have a hotmail account for XBox Live anyway right? And very few people are using an incredible amount of space. So even if they didn’t make the same games accessible outside the 360 it still seems like the infrastructure is already in place for cloud storage of save games. But that’s just me. Whatever.

I do actually own the first Mass Effect for 360 and I was thinking about playing it via 360. Then I thought about the non-reliablity of both the system itself and the drive in particular and realized I would like both the first one and eventually the second one on the PC instead. So I bought it on Steam. Which was probably dumb since I have both Dragon Age and Fallout 3 waiting in the wings to be played not mention everything else I have to do right now. I could have waited another six months for it to be $10 and still not played it for a while. But I just felt like buying it. And at least now I can sell the 360 copy back. Right?

I also went on a steam backup kick today for some reason. I haven’t really done so up until now. But I started realizing I could save some space on the my hard drive, not that I really need extra space, and still have a convenient way of getting them back on really quick should the need arise. It’s nice to have the option. The dual layer DVD-Rs I just so happen to have a surplus of may have something to do with it as well. It’s been so long since I had to write to an optical disc though. It’s amazing something I used to do so regularly has dropped to near non-existant.

I also wasted some time watching some youtube videos of a star trek tribute band called Warp 11. Apparently they just recently played at Mac Exp 2010. I have to say I know there’s ways of push innuendo into sci-fi and star trek in particular language but they do an especially good job of finding ways to do this.

I guess lastly  I will mention I spent many hours going through all my stuff in bins and throwing stuff away. I have especially thrown away a lot of clothes. It’s some how now hard to believe I could have ever in the past 10 years some how been at a loss for something to where. I mean my god I have accumulated a ton clothes. It will probably end up going to charity. I mean if I feel like it and they’ll take it.

I also started to sort all the things into some semi-logical storage bins. Network and phone cables in one tub, and well the ambiguous “USB-related” cables end up in a shoe box also in the bin with the Ethernet and phone cables. There’s also one for audio/video cables. Besides clothes I’ve apparently accumulated S-Video cables. Can’t imagine an instance when I would need them but they are there for when I do for some reason.

The pile of stuff int he neighboring room has definately shrunk to a significant degree. So I am optoimisic. Maybe a couple a more days of this and I’ll actually have an almost reasonable amount of stuff in a mostly organized fashion.

Since my eyes are blurring I think I’m doing to stop now.
